Deploy on TrueNAS¶
TrueNAS SCALE runs apps with Docker, and its Install via YAML option accepts a Docker Compose file. This page generates that file for Strawly, with every password and key filled in, so you can install it from the TrueNAS web interface without a terminal.
Strawly is then reachable on your local network at http://<truenas-address>:<port>.
1. Generate the app file¶
Fill in the form and select Generate. The passwords and keys are created in your browser and are not sent anywhere.
Strawly will be at . Sign in with your admin email and this first password, which you change at first sign-in:
Copy the password now. It is not stored anywhere else.
Check the list of releases for the newest versions. The Azure module version must support the Strawly version you choose.
2. Install it in TrueNAS¶
- In the TrueNAS web interface, open Apps, then Discover Apps.
- Open the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Install via YAML.
- Name the app
strawly, paste the YAML, and save.
TrueNAS downloads the images and starts the app. The first start takes a few minutes. Two short-lived containers, migrations and seeder, prepare the database and then stop. That is expected.
3. Sign in¶
Open the address the generator showed, sign in with your admin email and the first password, and choose a new password. Strawly then asks whether to restore a backup or start blank.
Plain HTTP
Strawly runs over plain HTTP on your network, so passwords and cost data are not encrypted in transit. That is acceptable on a trusted home or office network. If you already run a reverse proxy with HTTPS on your TrueNAS (for example Nginx Proxy Manager), point it at the Strawly port, and Strawly works behind it unchanged.
Upgrading¶
- Read the release list to pick versions that work together.
- Download a backup from Settings > Database Usage, in case you need to go back.
- In TrueNAS, edit the
strawlyapp. Change the version at the end of the fourstrawly-backendandstrawly-frontendimage lines, and the twostrawly-optimizations-azurelines, then save.
TrueNAS pulls the new images and restarts the app. The migrations container updates the database before the new backend starts.
Backups¶
Use the in-app backup under Settings > Database Usage and store the file somewhere other than the TrueNAS itself. A ZFS snapshot of the app dataset taken while Strawly runs captures the database mid-write. It usually recovers, but the in-app backup is the reliable copy. See Backup and Restore.
