Try Strawly on your computer

This guide runs Strawly on your own laptop or desktop, reachable only from that computer. You do not need a server or a domain. Use it to look around, load demo data, or connect a test Azure subscription.

1. Install Docker Desktop

Your computer What to install
macOS (Apple silicon or Intel) Docker Desktop for Mac
Windows 10 or 11 Docker Desktop for Windows with the WSL 2 backend, plus a Linux distribution from the Microsoft Store, for example Ubuntu
Linux Docker Engine

Start Docker Desktop and wait until it reports that it is running.

On Windows, open the Ubuntu app (WSL) for the next step. The installer runs inside it.

2. Run the installer

Open a terminal and run:

curl -fsSL https://git.strawly.app/Strawly/deployment/raw/branch/main/install.sh | bash -s -- --local

It asks five questions:

  1. Instance name. Press Enter to keep strawly.
  2. Port. Press Enter to take the suggested free port, for example 8080.
  3. Admin email. The email you will sign in with.
  4. Azure module. Answer yes to see the Azure screens, even without credentials.
  5. Demo data. Answer yes to fill Strawly with a fictional Azure estate and six months of history, so every dashboard has something to show.

The installer downloads Strawly, starts it, and prints something like:

Strawly is ready.
  Open: http://localhost:8080
  Email: you@example.com
  Password: Sw-3f9a1c2b7e4d-8C1A2F!9

The password is shown only once. Copy it now.

3. Sign in

Open the address in your browser, sign in with the email and password, and choose a new password when asked.

4. Stop, start or remove it

strawly stop # stops Strawly, keeps your data
strawly start # starts it again
strawly remove # deletes it, after offering a final backup

To remove Strawly and everything it created, see Uninstall.

If your terminal does not find strawly, run it as ~/.local/bin/strawly, or add ~/.local/bin to your PATH.

Uninstall

strawly uninstall

This removes every instance and its database, the HTTPS proxy and its certificates, the Strawly Docker images, the strawly command and the ~/strawly folder. It first offers to save a final database backup of each instance to a folder in your home directory. That folder is the only thing left afterwards, and only if you choose to keep it.

Docker stays installed, because other software may use it. If the Strawly installer installed Docker, the command prints how to remove it.
